Montana History Books
The Montana Memory Project, in collaboration with museums and libraries around the state of Montana, are pleased to present this collection of free-to-read digital history books. These books were published from the 18th all the way through the 21st centuries. The topics range from homesteading, to mining, to in-depth family histories. There are a number of autobiographies of early Montanans, as well as more modern looks back at the early days of the state. In particular, the books in this listing comprise an unparalleled collection of histories of Montana counties and localities. They have been painstakingly digitized by staff and volunteers at dozens of institutions. Please note that not all book listings display a cover thumbnail in this listing.

Boyhood Recollections: A Narrative of Homestead Days in Northeastern Montana
Description: Part of Jorgen Jorgensen family papers, 1921-1938. The collection consists of a typed translation of the autobiography of Jorgen Jorgensen, written in 1938 and translated by Henry Jorgensen in 1958; an undated reminiscence by Otto Jorgensen; and a diary of Dagny Elisabet Jorgensen for the summer of 1921. All three items chronicle life in the Danish-American community of Dagmar, Mont. Eli's diary describes threshing by Thomas Sundsted's crew in the summer of 1921.

Description: Lone Wolf in the Promised Land is an in depth account of the tragic murders of five immigrants passing through the Judith Basin in June of 1889. Edward and Lucina Crowell Biggs, Joseph and Sarah Joliff Kurtz, and six year Ida Schauss were the victims of a wily criminal from Great Falls, Montana named James Wilber. Wilber had met his victims at Helena and offered to guide the party to their desired destination of the mining town of Maiden in the Judith Mountains of central Montana. The events leading up to the tragic crimes on June 7 and the days following are covered in detail with a number of rare old west crime scene photos making the story come alive.
