Collection SummaryCarbon County Museum has compiled a collection of photographs that highlight two of Carbon County’s major industries, ranching and mining. Dilworth Cattle Company, the largest early cattle business in the area, was located southeast of Red Lodge earlier than 1884. The majority of this land had been Crow Indian Reservation. Dilworth Cattle Company’s foreman, John Tolman, has provided snapshots into ranching life and early Red Lodge. Likewise, the Rocky Fork Coal Company began coal mining production in 1887. Coal mining saw immigrants working in mines across Montana, including the Red Lodge area.Contributing InstitutionCarbon County Historical Society & Museum
