DescriptionCharles “Chuck” Johnson (1948-2023), known as the “Dean of Capitol Reporters,” worked the halls of the Montana Capitol as a reporter covering 22 legislative sessions, seven governors, nine US Senators, and 10 US Representatives, in addition to countless state legislators, elections, conventions and policies. His first major coverage was the 1972 Constitutional Convention. He was educated at the University of Montana and Oxford and received an Honorary Doctorate from Montana State University. In retirement he served on a number of boards including the Board of Trustees of the Montana Historical Society. Chuck was renowned for his historical knowledge.
Nancy Leifer, Missoula, is the President of the League of Women Voters of Montana. As such, Nancy is a successor to many League leaders who forged the path to a Constitutional Convention in 1972 and participated in the drafting and passage of the Constitution itself. Nine members of the League were among the 19 women delegates to the Constitutional Convention, an event that broke the glass ceiling for women in Montana politics and government. Nancy is the Secretary/Treasurer of Friends of the Montana Constitution and served on the Executive Committee of the Constitutional Convention Celebration Committee that in 2022 spearheaded the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Montana’s 1972 Constitution.
