Collection SummaryKumamoto Art Week was an arts festival held at Buck-Butterfield Ranch in Bozeman from July 20 to July 26, 1992, that commemorated the tenth anniversary of Montana’s sister state relationship with the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto, Japan. Numerous events were planned around the theme of “movement and stillness” such as art exhibitions, a fashion show, a contemporary ikebana display (the art of flower arrangement), and Japanese cuisine. The festival was formed around the collaboration of nine Japanese artists from the fields of music, dance, sculpture, photography, glass work, flower arranging, and fashion design. The occasion aimed to enhance cultural understanding between Montana and Kumamoto, inspire artist collaborations, and examine the relationship between humans and nature. Prior to the Art Week, a delegation from the Montana Arts Council visited Kumamoto in April 1992 to finalize plans for the festival. Much of this planning and correspondence between organizers makes up the bulk of the collection.Contributing InstitutionMontana Arts Council
