DescriptionView of the Dakota, the first gold quartz mine discovered in 1862 in Montana near Bannack. Brush dots the rocky hillside. Printed text on verso: 'The Dakota was a large vein carrying free gold, varying from three to eight feet in thickness. Its owners were Arnold & Allen, who erected a crude 6-stamp mill on the property. A blacksmith fashioned the stamps from old wagon tires. Water furnished the power and a fortune in gold was extracted.'
