Collection SummaryPhotographer Harley Hettick’s initial proposal was simple: to attempt to record, in an honest and authentic manner, Powwows as they existed in 1970’s Montana. The resulting collection of photographs, displayed at the Missoula Art Museum in January 1976 during an exhibition titled Indian Country - Love It or Leave It, highlighted the unique blending of established and modern cultural practices taking place on reservations at that time. From images of children playing and motorcycles in front of teepees to dancing and beauty contests, Hettick sought to “capture as many cultural anachronisms as possible.” In doing so he hoped to provide others with an unfiltered view of these strongholds of culture, and to dispel popular misrepresentations of the lives and heritage of Native people through documentary photography.Contributing InstitutionMissoula Art MuseumRelated Main CollectionMissoula Art Museum Exhibition Collection
