DescriptionThis town, the mountains, and the campground in the southwestern corner of Glacier National Park all take their name from Milo and Diane Apgar, who arrived in 1892 from Minnesota with their 2 sons and built the first cabin at the foot of Lake McDonald. On this same site, Milo’s sons, Harvey and Esli, built the Apgar Log Cabin Resort in the mid-1890s to provide services for the many tourists arriving at West Glacier on the Great Northern Railway. In 1908, Harvey Apgar filed a homestead claim and received the patent to his father’s original property. In 1914, he platted a 52-lot subdivision and sold one of the first lots to cowboy artist Charlie Russell.
