DescriptionAugusta takes its name from Augusta Hogan, daughter of homesteader J. D. Hogan. The post office, established in 1884, predated the town’s incorporation by 10 years. Augusta thrived until April 4, 1901, when a huge fire ripped through the town. By 1914, Augusta had recovered, but the completion of a Great Northern Railway’s branch line to Gilman 2 miles away briefly challenged the town. Augusta, however, reclaimed its status with the extension of the rail line to the town in the late 1920s. Today Augusta is the gateway to the Scapegoat and the Bob Marshall wilderness areas, which encompass more than 1 million acres of the Rocky Mountains.Personal NamesHogan, AugustaHogan, J.D.Contributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation4068 ft.CountyLewis and Clark County
