DescriptionBuilt in 1939 by the State Water Conservation Board, the Bair Reservoir is located on the North Fork of the Musselshell River, adjacent to the town of Checkerboard. It was named in honor of Charles M. Bair, who came to Montana in 1883 as a Northern Pacific Railroad conductor. In 1890, Bair established a sheep ranch on the Musselshell River that became one of the largest in the state. His home at Martinsdale is now a private museum and holds collections of fine furniture, artwork, and Native American artifacts acquired by Charles and his daughters, Alberta and Marguerite, in their world travels.Personal NamesBair, Charles M.Contributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation5329 ft.CountyMeagher County
