DescriptionThe Milwaukee Road established Baker, the future county seat of Fallon County, on the shores of the lake it had created to supply water for its locomotives. Originally named Lorraine, the town was renamed in honor of engineer A. G. Baker in 1908. Thanks to a successful Milwaukee Land Company campaign to attract homesteaders to the area, Baker served a growing community of dryland farmers. In 1912, oil and natural gas deposits were discovered near Baker. By 1920, Baker had more than 1,000 residents, and the population rose steadily until 1970, when it peaked at a little over 2,500. It has been slowly dwindling ever since, though commercial gas wells are still numerous in the area. Elevation: 2,937 ft. Location: Fallon CountyPersonal NamesBaker, A.G.
