DescriptionThis southern extension of the Bitterroot Range, running 165 miles between Lost Trail Pass and Monida Pass, forms the state line between Montana and Idaho. It is named after Beaverhead Rock, a Jefferson River landmark. When traveling through the area on August 8, 1805, Sacagawea recognized this rock, which her Shoshone tribe called the “Beaver’s head.” While the name originates with the Shoshones, trappers later applied it to the mountain range and river.Personal NamesSacagaweaOther Name(s)Beaver's HeadContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1]
