DescriptionSituated just outside the boundaries of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation on the banks of the Tongue River, Birney was named for an early trader who annually bought furs from the Northern Cheyennes. The town, never more than a few businesses and a post office, served the surrounding ranch community beginning about 1886. In the 1950s, Birney began billing itself as “the heart of dude ranch country.” Elevation: 3,125 ft.
