DescriptionBlackfoot City was an early placer gold–mining town that began on Ophir Creek in 1865. Named for the nearby Blackfoot River (early residents mistakenly thought the site was the river’s headwaters), the town during its first year boasted 7 mercantiles, 2 doctors, 2 blacksmiths, a carpenter-coffin maker, a Chinese laundry, and several whiskey dealers. Because of confusion with the town of Blackfoot in what is now Glacier County, Blackfoot City’s name was changed to Ophir Creek in 1896, but locals continued to refer to their community as Blackfoot City. As with most boomtowns, Blackfoot City’s demise was almost as rapid as its inception.
