DescriptionBozeman Pass is named for John Bozeman, the miner-turned-guide who, with John Jacobs, in the early 1860s established the Bozeman Trail, which cuts over Bozeman Pass to enter the Gallatin Valley. (Capt. William Clark used the pass on his return trip in 1806.) In 1883, the Northern Pacific Railroad laid tracks over the pass and, on January 10, 1884, opened the Bozeman Tunnel, a 3,600-foot-long tunnel constructed by 100 men over the course of 2 years.Personal NamesBozeman, JohnJacobs, JohnOther Name(s)Bozeman TrailContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation5760 ftCountyGallatin County
