DescriptionOriginally known as Jefferson Island (now the settlement on the opposite bank of the Jefferson River), Cardwell takes its name from Edward Cardwell, area landowner and state senator. The Mayflower Mining Company, which operated a gold and silver mine from the 1890s into the 1930s, helped the town thrive. The Northern Pacific maintained a station in Cardwell from 1890 into the 1970s. Cardwell was on the Yellowstone Trail auto route, and in 1949 Indiana University made it the headquarters of the Indiana University Field Station. Chet Huntley, NBC newscaster, was born in Cardwell in 1912. Elevation: 4,282 ft.
