DescriptionThe name Cat Creek is attributed to an early cowboy who reportedly roped a mountain lion along this creek that flows into the Musselshell River. For years, the creekâs location moved about on maps; in 1870, Walter W. DeLacy drew the creek between Blood and Dovetail creeks, as did William Ludlow in 1875. It found its current location in 1900. The 1919 discovery of oil on Cat Creek northwest of Mosby and the construction of a pipeline from the Cat Creek Oil Field marked a radical change for area homesteaders. At the peak of production in 1922, the 11 wells recovered 3 million barrels of oil. By the 1930s, Continental Oil Company (CONOCO) dominated the oil fields. Another boom in the 1940s lasted until the early 1960s.Personal NamesDeLacy, Walter W.Ludlow, WilliamContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] CountyPetroleum County
