DescriptionChristina, on the site of the original Hilger homestead, is named for Christina Fergus Hilger. Daughter of William Fergus, owner of the Box Elder Ranch, Christina was born in Scotland and came to Montana with her parents during the 1870s. In 1884, she married David J. Hilger, and the couple settled on his sheep ranch at Dog Creek (so named for the numerous prairie dog towns along its banks). According to a reminiscence by David Hilger, the fleeing Nez Perces came down Dog Creek and camped in the river bottom at Christina in October 1877.Personal NamesHilger, Christina FergusFergus, WillimaHilger, David J.Other Name(s)Hilger HomesteadContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation3577 ft.CountyFergus County
