DescriptionCattleman A. B. Cook, who began ranching in 1907, dominated the nation’s Hereford-breeding industry between 1917 and 1927. A forced dispersal sale of his 2,527 purebred Herefords shortly before his death in 1928 was the nation’s largest breeding stock sale on record, grossing more than $450,000. Cook’s home, built in 1915 near Canton, was one of Broadwater County’s largest and finest. The mansion, however, had been vacant for 30 years when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced plans to flood the area to create Canyon Ferry Reservoir. Contractors divided the home into 3 sections, transported it across the Missouri River, and brought it to its current location on US 12, where it is now a bed and breakfast. Elevation: 3,844 ft.
