DescriptionCrown Butte, an igneous shonkinite intrusion, rises more than 4,000 feet from the valley floor. Both Crown Butte and nearby Square Butte are spectacular examples of laccoliths, remnants of molten magma breaking the surface. On top of the butte is an “eagle catch” whose presence shows evidence of historic Native American use of the butte. The Nature Conservancy purchased the 375 acres of grassland on the butte’s top in 1983, opening the area to educational and scientific use and study.
