DescriptionThe Montana legislature carved a new county from the former Big Horn County in 1877 and named it in honor of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer of Little Bighorn battle fame. Custer County initially encompassed the battlefield and all the land to the territory’s eastern boundary, but over the years it lost land to 5 new counties. Today the county surrounds its county seat, Miles City, on both sides of the Yellowstone River.Personal NamesCuster, George ArmstrongContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] CountyCuster County
