DescriptionTwo stories explain the origin of Elliston’s name. The more likely is that it honors Northern Pacific Railroad director John W. Ellis. In the more romantic story, the town was named Alicetown for the daughter of an early settler, Hubert Coty, operator of the MacDonald Pass tollgate until 1882. By the mid-1880s, Elliston was flourishing as a center for gold and quartz mining. The town burned twice, in 1894 and 1895. Many disheartened businessmen did not rebuild a second time. The Elliston Lime Company began processing lime in 1902 and by 1903 was producing 900 bushels per day The lime kiln closed in 1965.Personal NamesEllis, John W.Coty, HubertCoty, AliceOther Name(s)AlicetownContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation5051 ft.CountyPowell County
