DescriptionElmo’s name is derived from that of a Blackfeet man, Elemie, who married a Kootenai woman and settled near the community. Eugene McCarthy purchased land from Elemie and platted the land that became the current townsite in 1917. Elmo had a dock and warehouse that served boat traffic on Flathead Lake, and the town acted as an overnight stop for people bound for Hot Springs.Personal NamesElemieMcCarthy, EugeneContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation2905 ft.CountyLake County
