DescriptionGarrison is definitely a town at the crossroads—it developed at the junction of the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Montana Union Railroad and today is at the junction of highways leading to Helena, Butte, and Missoula. Some sources suggest that Northern Pacific president Henry Villard named Garrison in 1883 after his father-in-law, William Lloyd Garrison, the abolitionist editor of the Liberator newspaper. With the railroad’s decline and the bypassing of the town by I-90, Garrison experienced its own decline in population and importance.Personal NamesGarrison, William LloydContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation4369 ft.CountyPowell County
