DescriptionHomesteaders began arriving along the banks of Sheep Creek and Lost Creek in 1906 and soon discovered the near-surface lignite coal. They burned it to survive the long, cold winters and established the town of Froid in 1908. Ambrose Olson named the town for an engineer he admired, and residents later discovered that the word, appropriately, meant “frigid” in French. The Great Northern Railway’s branch line between Bainville and Scobey arrived at Froid in 1910, the year the town was officially platted; residents observe this date as the official birthday of the town. Froid businesses watched with delight when the LaLonde Construction Company paved Main Street in 1959.Personal NamesOlson, AmbroseContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation2029 ft.CountyRoosevelt County
