DescriptionCoal Banks Landing was a low-water unloading site, as well as a refueling site, for steamboats headed up the Missouri River to Fort Benton. Steamboats plying the river consumed approximately 30 cords of wood every day, which quickly depleted the available supply of wood. To supplement their fuel, steamers used the low-grade coal dug near Coal Banks. The landing also served as the drop-off point for supplies headed to Fort Assinniboine near Havre. It is the site of an earlier post office called Rerger, known as Camp Otis to the U.S. Army.
