DescriptionRobert Dempsey established a ranch on Dempsey Creek that served as a boardinghouse for miners traveling to and from Cottonwood (later Deer Lodge) in 1862. He named the nearby stream and community after himself. Rumor circulated that Dempsey was a member of the infamous Plummer Gang and aided road agents with fresh horses and supplies. The suspicions were never proved.Personal NamesDempsey, RobertOther Name(s)Dempsey CreekContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation4887 ft.
