Description“Skookum Joe” Anderson, David Jones, and others first discovered gold in Virgin and Alpine gulches in the vicinity of Maiden in 1880. C. C. Snow and J. R. Kemper established the townsite of Maiden in April 1881. Mrs. James H. (Jennie) Connely named the town for her daughter, whom the miners had nicknamed the “Little Maiden.” Maiden’s gold mines were originally on the Fort Maginnis military reservation; reservation boundaries were redrawn to exclude the developing mines. The district included the productive Maginnis, Spotted Horse, and Collar gold mines. The town was almost totally destroyed by fire in August 1905.Personal NamesAnderson, David JonesSnow, C.
