DescriptionThe Port of Scobey was established as a border crossing in the mid-1960s when MT 13 was routed from Whitetail to Scobey. Before that time, the border was open, and in the early 1900s cattle rustling was common. During the 1920s, bootleggers smuggled liquor across the border, and Canadian farmers hauled wheat to the Scobey elevator to take advantage of the higher U.S. prices. In 1996, the port became a voice-activated crossing. Americans and Canadians registered to use the system are able to open the border gate by entering an identification number and saying a predetermined phrase.
