DescriptionThere are several stories about how Troy received its name. One states that E. L. Preston, a Great Northern Railway surveyor who helped lay out the townsite, named the town after Troy Morrow, the son of the family he boarded with at the time. According to another, the town received its name from the Troy system of units, used to measure gold, silver, and other precious metals. A third has the name coming from a Great Northern civil engineer. As railroad construction began in the area in 1891, the town of Lake City came into existence. When the construction crews moved on, the camp declined. Residents hoping to salvage its existence changed the name to Troy in 1892. That fall, the Great Northern established a freight division point nearby, giving rise to West Troy. The original residents abandoned old Troy for the new townsite. Eventually, the name West Troy was shortened to Troy. The town draws economic support from the timber and mining industries. Personal NamesPreston, E.
