DescriptionThe Montana legislature created Yellowstone County in 1883 from Gallatin and Custer counties. It takes its name from the Yellowstone River, called La Roche Jaune by French trappers, for the yellow rock, and Iichiilkaashaashe, “Elk river,” by the Crows. The Yellowstone Valley supports diverse agriculture, its principal crops being sugar beets, wheat, and soybeans. Billings is the seat of this county in south-central Montana.Contributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] CountyYellowstone County
