DescriptionWith the discovery of gold in the Big Belt Mountains, the town of New York City appeared at the junction of Trout Creek and York Gulch in 1866. It was not long before the name was shortened to simply York. As the town developed, a smaller community, Brooklyn, appeared across the creek. Over a 3-year span (1866–69), the population of York jumped to roughly 7,000 residents. As with most of Montana’s mining communities, the population dwindled when placer mining faded by 1874. The Trout Creek Mine Company hydraulically mined York Gulch from 1888 to 1889; the Golden Messenger Mine opened a year later and operated until 1945. Locals boast that the York Bar serves the best hamburger in the county.Other Name(s)New York CityBrooklynYork BarContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation3978 ft.
