DescriptionSioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors defeated 12 companies of the 7th U.S. Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer here on June 25–26, 1876. In 1879, the battlefield received designation as a national cemetery, and in 1940 jurisdiction transferred to the NPS. The battle was long known as “Custer’s Last Stand” and the place called Custer Battlefield. In 1991, Congress changed it to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. A memorial to honor the Indian participants who fought and died in the Battle of the Little Bighorn was dedicated on June 25, 2003. The Crow name for the battlefield is Ihkale’axdaaku, “Where Child of the Morning Star was wiped out,” referring to Custer by his Crow name.Personal NamesCuster, George ArmstrongOther Name(s)Custer BattlefieldIhkale’axdaakuContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation3167 ft.
