DescriptionOvando takes its name from Ovando Hoyt, a rancher and businessman who came to the Big Hole Basin in 1865, served as miller on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and appeared in the Blackfoot Valley in 1882. Hoyt served as Ovando postmaster from 1883 to 1898. Settlers were attracted by the rich agricultural land in the vicinity, swelling the town’s population to 100 residents by 1919. Unfortunately, that same year a fire destroyed 7 buildings. Today the area offers access to the Bob Marshall and Scapegoat wilderness areas, as well as to numerous fly fishing streams. The town is probably best known for Trixie’s Bar, located along MT 200, named for Trixie McCormick, a former owner and Montana rodeo queen.
