DescriptionSheridan traces its beginnings to the construction of a sawmill on Mill Creek by James Gammell in 1863. As placer mining developed, other residents began building in the vicinity. Discussion turned to a name for the budding town when Rozelle Bateman, regarded as the “Father of Sheridan,” decided to apply for a post office. Stories vary on the origins of the town’s name in 1866. The most interesting centers around “Sheridan’s Ride,” a poem by Thomas B. Read about the 1864 Battle of Winchester in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. According to the poem, Union general Philip Sheridan begins the day 20 miles from the battlefield and, in a heroic ride, makes it back in time to rally his forces to victory. Today Sheridan is a bustling ranch town in the Ruby Valley.
