DescriptionEstablished in 1868 as a mining camp on Cable Mountain, overlooking Georgetown Lake, Southern Cross operated as a company town until the gold mines shut down in 1941. It then saw a long period of decline. The tiny ghost town came to national attention in 1998 when People magazine ran a story about the townsite’s new owners evicting local residents. These “squatters” eventually lost their homes; the town and all its buildings remain in private hands.
