DescriptionLocated almost exactly halfway between Bozeman and Helena, Radersburg was established in 1865 when gold was discovered there. It is named for Reuben Rader, a Virginian who ranched and prospected in the area. Radersburg was soon a center of transportation, a layover point for the government mail stage, and a stopping place for travelers. By 1866, it was home to a wide variety of businesses, including a livery, saloon, general mercantile, barbershop, drugstore, and shoemaker. It had a population of 1,000 in 1869, when it became the county seat of Jefferson County. The seat of government was lost in 1883 to Boulder, and most of the businesses and population moved to Townsend to follow the railroad. Leading lady of stage and screen Myrna Loy (1905–93) was born in Radersburg.Personal NamesRader, ReubenLoy MyrnaContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation4316 ft.CountyBroadwater County
