DescriptionWith the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad’s transcontinental line through Montana in the 1880s, the railroad developed a station as well as a pumping plant at this site to provide water for their steam engines. The post office opened in 1904 as Sanders, named for prominent Montana jurist and politician Wilbur Fisk Sanders. The town developed in conjunction with the sugar beet industry along the Yellowstone River. The Sanders School District, established in 1907, closed in 1950, and Sanders’s students were bused to Hysham. The front gate and 2-hole privy are all that remain. Sanders residents, among them descendants of area homesteaders, have carefully refurbished the gymnasium/community hall, which is listed in the National Register.
