DescriptionIn February 1963, Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman designated a new wilderness area, the Selway-Bitterroot, comprising some 1.2 million acres in southwestern Montana and eastern Idaho. Boundaries were drawn from a much larger primitive area established by the USFS in 1936. The name Selway comes from Thomas Selway, who ran sheep in Idaho’s Selway River country during the late 1890s. Bitterroot is derived from the mountain range in Montana.Personal NamesFreeman, OrvilleSelway, ThomasOther Name(s)Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness AreaContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1]
