DescriptionIn 1913, veteran county splitter Daniel McKay successfully lobbied the Montana legislature to create Sheridan County from Dawson and Valley counties. Residents named the new northeastern Montana county after Gen. Philip Sheridan, who had served with distinction during the Civil War and retired as commanding general of the U.S. Army. Plentywood won the county seat election over Medicine Lake by a mere 42 votes. During the 1920s and ’30s, Sheridan County was a hotbed of Socialist and Communist sentiment, and home to a radical newspaper, the Producers News, published in Plentywood.Personal NamesMcKay, DanielSheridan, PhilipContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] CountySheridan County
