DescriptionAt the time of the Stevens survey in 1853–54, Sleeping Child Creek was named Fabulous or Weeping Child Creek. One version of the legend says that a child had been abandoned here at the hot springs by its mother when her tribe was being pursued by settlers. The settlers, hearing the baby cry, named the springs Weeping Child Springs. Other stories give the origin of the name as Snetetse, a Salish word meaning “Place of the sleeping child.” A commercial hot springs appeared here as early as 1894.
