DescriptionSluice Boxes State Park was designated in the early 1970s to protect and provide access to a spectacular limestone canyon on Belt Creek. In 1891, the Montana Central Railway built a branch line to Monarch and Neihart through the canyon, constructing a series of trestles and a tunnel. The railroad ran Sunday “fishing trains” from Great Falls to the canyon, from 1914 until they closed the line in the 1940s. The limestone quarries and kilns at Albright in mid-canyon provided fluxing limestone to the Anaconda Company’s smelter at Great Falls.Other Name(s)Sluice BoxesContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation4345 ft.
