DescriptionThe name Pipestone recalls the clay along the creek bank that various Indian tribes harvested to make pipes. The Pipestone post office opened in 1880. The Butte Miner reported on March 24, 1893, that the Pipestone Mineral Springs and Townsite Company had incorporated to develop the nearby hot springs into a summer resort. Although a small resort opened around the springs and a townsite was laid out, a community never developed.
