DescriptionOn May 3, 1805, members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped near the area where the Redwater River empties into the Missouri River. Since the site lay some 2,000 miles from the mouth of the Missouri, they named this stream 2,000 Mile Creek. The origin of the current name is not known. In December 1876, en route to Canada after the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Sitting Bull and his band encountered the U.S. Cavalry along the Redwater River. During the 1910s, the Milwaukee Road promoted the Redwater Valley to homesteaders as prime farmland.Personal NamesSitting BullOther Name(s)2,000 Mile CreekContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1]
