DescriptionNamed for David Rice, the town’s first resident, Riceville was established as a station stop on the Great Northern Railway; the post office opened under that name in 1890. Rice, who moved to Montana Territory in 1882 from Leadville, Colorado, built charcoal kilns at Barker to fuel nearby smelters. He then moved to Neihart, where he purchased silver mines. Rice served as Cascade County tax assessor and took up ranching in his later years.
