DescriptionDuring the 1880s, area ranches held an annual roundup of open-range cattle at the site of present-day Roundup. In 1882, buffalo hunter James McMillan and his wife established the first Roundup, operating a saloon, store, and dance hall at the confluence of Half Breed Creek and the Musselshell River. The post office opened in 1883. In 1907, the Milwaukee Road reached Roundup, and the new town of Roundup developed a short distance north of the old town. The first coal mine opened that same year, and others followed, to supply the railroad with coal. Roundup is also notable as the home town of Tony Boyle, president of the United Mine Workers of America from 1963 to 1972.Personal NamesMcMillan, JamesBoyle, TonyContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation3224 ft.
