DescriptionMount Cowen is named for George Cowan. Fleeing pursuit by the U.S. Army, the Nez Perces led by Chief Joseph passed through Yellowstone National Park in August 1877. There, a smaller party of Nez Perces encountered a group of tourists, including George and Emma Cowan, in the lower Geyser Basin. A fracas ensued. George Cowan survived several gunshot wounds, and his story became legendary over his long legal career.
