DescriptionOriginally a natural lake in the Beartooth Mountains known as Long Lake, Mystic Lake was dammed by the Montana Power Company in 1926, raising the water level and increasing the surface acres. The lake’s name is credited to a surveyor for the Montana Power Company named Mystic who, in 1918, helped the company launch its effort to dam the lake to generate hydroelectricty. During construction, Montana Power built a 1.5-mile-long, 48-inch wood stave pipe along the face of the mountain that led to a penstock at the power station. The power station generated 22,000 kW of electricity beginning in 1926; the station remains in operation today. It is currently (2003–09) undergoing the relicensing process, which takes into account wildlife, aesthetics, water quality, and other factors.
