DescriptionNelson Reservoir is named for Henry H. Nelson, a Vandalia rancher instrumental in promoting the Milk River Irrigation Project. Nelson Reservoir lies in a natural basin, enhanced by 5 long dikes. The dikes were raised in 1921–22 to enlarge the reservoir. The project diverted water from the Milk River by way of the Dodson South Canal, stored it in Nelson Reservoir, and then dispersed it for irrigation. There is a campground and fishing access at the reservoir. A much smaller Nelson Reservoir lies about 30 miles south-southwest.
