DescriptionAlexander Norris built the first house in what became the town of Norris in September 1865. Norris proved an indifferent booster for the new town, selling a few lots but mainly working diligently to establish his own ranch. He discovered and sold the Revenue Mine and, with the proceeds, started cattle ranching. Local mines produced approximately $3.9 million in gold between 1864 and 1930. Five mining districts surrounded the community: Washington, Lower Hot Springs, Meadow Creek, Upper Hot Springs, and Norwegian Gulch. The Northern Pacific Railroad built a branch line with the terminus at Norris in 1890, and the community continues to be a significant shipping point for cattle ranchers. A popular attraction is Norris Hot Springs, on the banks of Hot Springs Creek.
