DescriptionOriginally named Shambow, for George H. Shambow, one of the area’s earliest residents and its first postmaster, this Centennial Valley town was renamed Magdalen and finally, in the late 1890s, Lakeview, for its scenic location. Lakeview served as a supply center for Centennial Valley ranchers. Newspaper correspondent Lillian Hackett Hanson Culver wrote of life in the valley in the Dillon Tribune in 1897: “It looks like some of the women in this valley will soon be entitled to divorces if their husbands don’t spend a little more time at home with them. It is rather a lonesome place to expect their wives to be content, living alone so much.” Personal NamesShambow, George H.Culver, Lillian Hackett HansonOther Name(s)ShambowMagdalenContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation6709 ft.CountyBeaverhead County
